about the farm

FARM HISTORY
Brightside Vintage Farm

THIS LAND WAS ORIGINALLY HOMESTEADED ON MAY 22, 1897 and the original 160 Acre parcel was sold the next year to Mr. & Mrs. Moreau for $400 in gold coins. The recorded sale included the following: 3 plows, 1 rake, 2 wagons, 2 shovels, 2 pitch forks, 6 milk cans, 2 milk buckets, 100 bushels of wheat, 3 hogs, 10 cows, and a smooth mouthed horse! In 1900 Mr. Moreau built a 20x20 square foot home with 11 foot ceilings and a dirt cellar. Parts of the original farm house still remain, and remnants of the old-style insulation were found in the walls and attic (old bits of newspaper from 1890, old-fashioned Butterick sewing patterns, pieces of lace and the like).

THE DAIRY BARN The old dairy barn was built between 1910 and 1920, and has been lovingly maintained for a century now. The land has supported crops of timothy & alfalfa hay for horses and cows, and clover for hogs and calves. The orchard of 72 fruit trees was planted in the early 1980’s, with an original apple tree affectionately called Grandma nearby, the circumference of her trunk is nearly seven feet around!

Heidi Bright

Owning a historic farm was intended as a retirement investment for Heidi; as a "nice, quiet, rural lifestyle choice" (she laughs now about how that plan was turned upside down).  While shopping for a farm in 2012 Heidi stumbled on this property and it was "love at first sight" ~ the Orchard, historic Farmhouse, arboretum-like grounds and surrounding pastoral countryside was more than she'd imagined and she won the competitive bidding war for the farm.

In 2013, Heidi began to feel a nudge in her spirit to use the land for more than just farming, the nudge formed a question in her soul and she began praying and asking for clarity.  She will tell you that "it was like a download when the answer came".  After praying for over 3 years and "hearing nothing" she was suddenly given a vision in 2016 that showed groups coming to enjoy the beautiful setting, especially for Non-profit and Ministry gatherings along with Weddings and Celebrations of Life.  It was a vision that God has now poured his blessing into, with many amazing people coming together as a community to restore and improve this oasis in order to provide a Venue for small and medium sized groups to gather in comfort, amidst the lush green pastoral setting that is bathed in sunshine, and to feel the tangible peace that dwells at Brightside Vintage Farm.

Joe Done

General Manager / Co-Founder

When Joe, a CWU Baseball Player, came to live at Brightside Vintage Farm in 2017, Heidi shared the vision she'd been given with him. It "clicked" in his spirit and he began helping out with projects at the farm; bringing groups of friends to work on landscape improvements, hosting Bonfire Events, bible studies, and game nights on a regular basis...

Brightside Vintage Farm's destiny and purpose began to take shape thanks to Joe's unique skill sets, and his loving, generous spirit.  After graduating from CWU Joe had returned to his family's farm in Monroe for a short time, working the Summer of 2018 at Rio Athletics; coaching young aspiring baseball players.  Joe will tell you that he was "called back to Ellensburg" to help launch this Event Venue business with Heidi, and when you meet him you will see that hospitality is definitely in his DNA.

Although they aren't related by blood, Joe and Heidi have adopted one another as family and their gifts and talents compliment one another for the benefit of the Farm and clients and guests that come to enjoy the Venue space!  Joe's great big heart is apparent the minute you talk to him, and he's a natural host who loves to make people feel at home.  Joe has been given an equity interest in Brightside Vintage Farm LLC and he has been taking the ball and running with it.  Fun fact:  Joe met his wife, Emma, at a work party at the Farm and together they have been working to implement upgrades & add to the vast collection of vintage decor and authentic antique furniture items.  Joe is excited for the future of Brightside Vintage Farm and is dedicated to the tenants of stewardship and a spirit of excellence, with an eye toward "going the extra mile" wherever possible.

Emma Done

Venue Manager Assistant

Emma is no stranger to farming, having grown up on an 8,000 acre wheat farm near Coulee City, Washington.  She is hard-working, down to earth, and is dedicated to helping Joe and Heidi run the Venue with a servant's heart and a talent for focusing on efficiency, while having fun! ...

Emma graduated from CWU in 2020 with a double major in elementary and early childhood education, and after completing her student teaching and getting married she decided to put teaching on hold, and instead she is providing hospitality services and administrative help for Brightside Vintage Farm.  Emma loves children and dogs, she is learning to garden, and she is an excellent cook!  Her laughter permeates our Farm and she's often seen with a tool in her hand working side-by-side with Joe fixing fences, and other projects (when she's not in the office or cooking up a meal for the community).  Emma and Joe had their first child in February 2022, so she has added the role of Mother to her many talents and gifts!
